Timothée Chalamet's Record-Breaking SNL 50 Return Makes His Best Skit Even Better (5)

Timothée Chalamet's upcoming return for Saturday Night Live 50 will make his best skit character in the famed show even better. All season long, Lorne Michael and NBC have come up with a fantastic slew of shows to celebrate the project's milestone. SNL 50 has featured hosts and musical guests including Martin Short, Jean Smart, Chappell Roan, and Stevie Nicks. As the season moves forward, it will continue this with a string of more impressive tandems to front the remainder of its celebratory period. Chalamet is part of that upcoming pool of hosts, which is exciting, considering his past appearances.

When he steps into Studio 8H this year, Chalamet will find himself in a familiar setting, having hosted SNL twice before. The first time he fronted the NBC weekly late-night staple was in 2020 for SNL 46, which featured Bruce Springsteen as the musical guest — his fourth time. Chalamet returned in 2023 for SNL 49 with musical guest Boygenius. In his SNL50 comeback, however, NBC will be changing things for the famed actor, whose star has skyrocketed in the last couple of years. That change-up goes hand-in-hand with making Chalamet's arguably best sketch in SNL better.

Timothée Chalamet Returns To SNL As Host & Musical Guest

Chalamet Will Do Double Duty

Timothée Chalamet's Record-Breaking SNL 50 Return Makes His Best Skit Even Better (6)

Chalamet will pull double-duty as both host and musical guest for SNL50's January 25 episode. His latest stint in the NBC comedy variety show is in line with his new film, Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, which was released over the holidays. This is a groundbreaking gig for Chalamet, as this is the first time in 30 years that Michaels has tapped a non-professional singer to also perform in SNL.

Before the Dune actor, only four non-professionals had served as both host and musical guest in the same show. That exclusive group includes Lily Tomlin (twice), Desi Arnaz, Gary Busey, and Deion Sanders. The last to do it was Sanders back in February 18, 1995, for SNL season 20. It's currently unclear what song Chalamet might perform in his debut as a musical guest, but it's highly likely that it will include songs from A Complete Unknown.

Chalamet's Most Memorable SNL Skit Character Is A SoundCloud Rapper

Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta Is An Icon

Timothée Chalamet's Record-Breaking SNL 50 Return Makes His Best Skit Even Better (7)

It's safe to say that Chalamet did a good job in his past SNL gigs, considering that NBC and Michaels are bringing him back just a year after his last one. If anything, being a host and a musical guest indicates how much trust and confidence the creative team has in him to pull the double duty off for SNL50. Beyond that, however, seeing him, a non-professional singer perform for the show makes his funniest skit better.

In SNL 46, Chalamet debuted the character, Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta — a SoundCloud rapper who joins some hip-hop legends to talk about rap and its impact on culture and society. It was clear from the get-go that he didn't know what he was talking about, which made the bit all the funnier. In his initial appearance, he was joined by Pete Davidson, with the duo performing one of their supposed hit songs. Chalamet reprised the role in SNL 49, with barely any changes to his naive and ignorant character. Davidson was no longer with him, but the actor still pulled it off.

How Chalamet's Upcoming SNL Stint Makes Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta Better

Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta Needs To Come Back

While Chalamet is similar to Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta in a way that they both aren't perceived as non-professional singers, one thing that the actor has that his SNL character doesn't have is actually knowing his craft. A Complete Unknown reviews praise Chalamet's take on Dylan's iconic songs, which is very impressive, considering how beloved they are. The actor even earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance. Because of this, it's exciting to see him perform in SNL50, although it will also be great to see Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta return via a skit for a third time, as well.

...given how popular Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta has been since he debuted a few years ago, bringing him back would be a treat for those who have enjoyed his past outings and, frankly, fans who just love hilarious Saturday Night Live skits in general.

The question now is if SNL50 will have Chalamet reprise his rapper persona as part of his comeback. Admittedly, it may be a bit too on the nose, since the actor is also performing as a musical guest. That said, given how popular Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta has been since he debuted a few years ago, bringing him back would be a treat for those who have enjoyed his past outings and, frankly, fans who just love hilarious Saturday Night Live skits in general.
